Gold Conversion Guide: Grams, Ounces, Tola, Vori, Baht β Explained with Charts
Gold is quoted globally per troy ounce (31.1035 g), but retail jewelry is usually weighed in grams β and in many regions still in tola, vori, baht, chi, tael, or don. This guide gives you the reference constants, practical formulas, and an easy conversion table.
Before You Convert: Purity vs. Weight
Weight units (g, oz, tola, etc.) measure how much metal, not how pure it is. To interpret price, combine weight with purity (karats/fineness). Need a refresher? See: Understanding Gold Hallmarks and Why 18K Gold Is the Perfect Balance.
Key Constants
- 1 troy ounce = 31.1035 g
- 1 tola (β vori/bhori) = 11.6638 g
- 1 baht (Thailand) = 15.244 g
- 1 chi (Vietnam) = 3.75 g
- 1 don (Korea) = 3.75 g
- 1 tael (Hong Kong convention) = 37.5 g (regional standards vary)
Formulas (copy-friendly)

Quick Conversion Table
| Unit | To grams | To troy ounces | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gram (g) | 1 | 0.0321507 | Retail jewelry is commonly weighed in grams |
| Troy ounce (oz t) | 31.1035 | 1 | Global spot price basis |
| Tola | 11.6638 | 0.3751 | South Asia; see also tola/vori guide |
| Vori (Bhori) | 11.6638 | 0.3751 | Bangladesh; effectively equal to tola |
| Baht | 15.244 | 0.4901 | Thailand; baht gold is often ~96.5% purity in trade |
| Chi | 3.75 | 0.1205 | Vietnam; 10 chi = 1 tael (regional) |
| Tael (HK conv.) | 37.5 | 1.205 | Regional standards vary; 37.5 g is widely used in bullion trade |
| Don (Korea) | 3.75 | 0.1205 | Used for jewelry & small bars |
Worked Examples
1) 2 tola β grams β ounces
2 Γ 11.6638 = 23.3276 g β 23.3276 Γ· 31.1035 = 0.75 oz t (approx.)
2) 1 oz t β grams β baht
1 Γ 31.1035 = 31.1035 g β 31.1035 Γ· 15.244 = ~2.04 baht
3) 20 g β chi β tael
20 Γ· 3.75 = 5.333β¦ chi; since 10 chi β 1 tael (37.5 g), thatβs ~0.533 tael
Using Conversions to Estimate Price
To estimate bullion value, first convert the weight to grams of pure gold, then multiply by the per-gram spot rate. (Retail prices also include making/design charges, taxes, brand premiums.)
pure_gold_weight_g = total_weight_g Γ (karat / 24)
bullion_value = pure_gold_weight_g Γ (spot_price_per_oz Γ· 31.1035)

Tip: When shopping in traditional markets, always ask for the weight in grams alongside local units β it makes price comparisons much easier.
